Who’s ticking off their bucket list?

Brad & ZoeHi, hallo, hola, bonjour, ciao, guten tag, konnichiwa, sa wad dee kha, etc etc… welcome to our blog!

We’re Brad and Zoe, two crazy Aussies who are crazy about each other and about travelling and experiencing as much as possible in this crazy world we live.  We’ve both packed up our lives, taken a year off work for a grown-up gap year to travel as far and as wide as time and money will allow.  We started this exciting adventure on the 26 June 2015.

Who’s Zoe?

42 patches and counting…

I’m a 30-something year old news tragic, travel lover, amateur photographer, dreamer and doer who is in love with life, has a passion for experience and a desire to share them with the world.  I’ve been a media professional in Australia for around 14 years, having worked as a television journalist, government media advisor and more recently as a PR consultant.

I started ‘Ticking Off the Bucket List’ (to not only tick an item off the bucket list) but to bring together my passion for travel and all the skills I’ve developed over the years – writing, photography, video editing and wrap them up in one neat little blog.

My bucket list is not a day by day or year by year thing, it is full of experiences I want to achieve in my lifetime.  The list is never empty or full and as quickly as one item is ticked off, another takes its place.

Travelling is a huge passion of mine which is why majority of my bucket list items involve jumping on a plane for.  I’ve been to 41 countries outside the wonderful world of Oz and right now we’re currently planning the biggest adventure of our lives to date.

Hopefully one day I can lay claim to having visited every country on Earth.

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.”

~ Susan Sontag

Who’s Brad?

I’ve been a firefighter with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service for nearly 20 years.

Leaving for South America

Leaving for South America

I’ve been a part of the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and Swift Water Rescue teams and been deployed to assist with many disasters that have gripped the state and country including floods and bushfires.

Zoe and I met more than four years ago over a mutual love for travelling and we’ve been doing it ever since.

As far as I’m concerned, life is one big adventure, so strap yourself in, hold on and enjoy the ride.

I can’t wait for our next big adventure!

If you have any cool ideas or things we should do/try then we’d would love to hear from you.

Where’s home?

When we’re not travelling the world, we live in Brisbane (aka Brisvegas) with around 2.2 million other people.  Brisbane is the capital of Queensland which is home to one of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts and the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef.

Queensland is also where our nation’s airline carrier Qantas was born, where the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo is located, where mangos, banana, sugar cane and macadamia nuts grow in abundance and kangaroos, koalas, crocodiles, snakes and toads roam.

It’s also known as the Sunshine state for its exceptional sunny weather most of the year which in Summer can range from tropically humid in the north to hot and dry in the south.

We love living here and feel exceptionally privileged and grateful we get to call it home.

Scratch that travel itch

By on August 18, 2015

The main reason I love sharing my travel adventures is not to brag.

No really, it’s not.

Yes, there is always that ‘from where you’d rather be’ postcard perfect photo but it’s never intended to be a thumb-nosed ha ha I’m here while your slaving away in your office cubicle post.

No really, it’s not.

You don’t believe me, do you?

First and foremost I love sharing my travel experiences to inspire. I want people to not just daydream about sitting on a tropical island beach somewhere, trekking mountain ranges or going on an African safari, but to actually use their holiday leave and book that bloody ticket. Or in my case, when the wanderlust gene is far too strong to ignore anymore, quit your job and take that chance to become a traveller, not just a tourist.

It doesn’t matter if you have a week or a year up your sleeve, you can travel. If you want something bad enough, you can make it happen. Except winning the lotto, I’ve wanted that pretty badly for while now and I still can’t seem to make that happen ;(

Back to inspiring people.

When you travel for longer periods of time, you do miss your family and friends back home. The biggest thing for me is being away for a whole year of my niece and nephews’ lives. At 5, 3 and 1, a year is a LONG time. They’ve already grown so much in the last couple of months.

So while I’m away, I want them to be inspired and to hopefully be as curious and adventurous about this amazing world we live in.

Before I left home I bought them a scratch off map of the world (around $20 on Ebay) so they could follow my travels from home and learn a little about each of the countries as I go.

One of the biggest kicks I get now after crossing the border of a new country is waiting for the Facebook photo from back home of them scratching off the map.

If I only inspire one person to take a chance, follow their dreams or to scratch that travel itch, then I’ll be even happier than I am right now.

I think I’ve already inspired two.

Go BIG in Hawaii

By on July 12, 2015

We decided to include Hawaii on our worldwide itinerary purely for the downtime. It was the first stop as Brad had been working pretty hard up until our departure and because we’d been a little pale from the Brisbane winter,

Splash out on a water bungalow experience

By on April 10, 2015

I’ve always wanted to stay in one of those resorts suspended over the ocean.  You know, like the picture perfect water bungalow post cards of Bora Bora or the Maldives. It’s no wonder these specific places come to mind when

Don’t underestimate Mount Kinabalu

By on August 16, 2014

Steal a dance in Borneo

By on August 15, 2014

This video comes with a disclaimer. As much as we love the song Stolen Dance by Milky Chance, we were definitely NOT stoned in paradise.  That would be illegal. Most of the time we were sober, except for this one

Get your dive ticket

By on May 15, 2014

Yeah, I’ve dreamt about it but it usually doesn’t end well. I think an unhealthy fear of the creatures of the deep has caused me to put off this bucket list item for quite some time. If it wasn’t for

Home is where the heart is

More than three decades ago my parents were sold on a little white house at Chandler. It had funny arched window facades and an orange tiled roof. A toad pond at the front and a dam at the back. I’m
